GO Logic Earns PHIUS+ Source Zero Design Award

The Fortin residence in Denmark, Maine, designed and constructed by GO Logic, has achieved Passive House Certification and received the prestigious Source Zero Design Award in the 2021 PHIUS competition. Principal Alan Gibson states: “We feel very honored to have received this award. The Fortins were great to work with and instrumental in many of the key design decisions.”

The “source zero” or “net-zero” moniker refers to buildings that are efficient enough that all of the energy they require to operate, including heating, cooling, ventilation, appliances, lighting, and utilities are offset by renewable energy sources on the property. A source-zero home offers homeowners a generation of zero energy bills (aside from base meter charges) and no concern over the inflation of energy prices over time. More importantly it is a zero-carbon home operationally, eliminating greenhouse gas emissions that would contribute to global warming.

Since its founding GO Logic has sought to bring the latest in efficiency, comfort, durability, and resilience to the residential market of the northeast US. Through our innovative use of materials and processes we have built well over 100 passive homes, many of which achieve net-zero status. In an effort to take quality even higher and deliver homes in a shorter timeframe at lower cost, we are now fully committed to panelized, pre-fabricated construction of our homes, both for new construction and retrofits.

The Passive House concept had its origins in North America in the 1970’s and found footing in Europe in the 1990’s. It takes slightly different forms in different countries around the world, but effectively sets a standard of energy conservation and how-low-can-you-go as measured in building energy demand. Phius is the North American passive house standard and certification agency. Its climate-specific energy standard now includes the PHIUS+ Source Zero category as its highest level of performance. In addition to energy savings, passive homes are healthier and more comfortable to live in due to their tight envelope and continuous ventilation systems. Homeowners feel the benefit of the passive approach directly through the quiet interior, healthy indoor air, even temperatures, and reduced risk of weather-related issues.

Winning the highly competitive Design Award at this year’s PhiusCon – their annual North American conference—is especially gratifying given the nature of the project as a pre-designed GO Home model of modest size and budget. The design was adapted to meet the owners’ design aesthetic and practical needs, on the site of a previous home that was lost in a fire.

The company’s goal is to bring more of these source-zero projects to more homeowners through our offsite, panelized process. Recognition at the 2021 PhiusCon event is a good indicator that GO Logic is on the right track with these innovations.
